Ubuntu-supported package.
ipheth is not even available in Lucid. (It can probably be backported to
lucid as soon as LP: #645680 is fixed)

Not quite. It is included in kernels since maverick, but not in Lucid.
On lucid, you'll need the ipheth-dkms package. This bug is fixed in
natty's linux kernel, and maverick's ipheth-dkms package.

I tried configuring a Mobile Broadband connection through network
manager (using settings appropriate for my carrier) but it's just made a
connection profile for an adapter that doesn't exist so

1.0+git20100223-1ubuntu1~ppa2
Tethering is working with this version. For now I'm going to pin them in
/etc/apt/preferences
