menuentry "FreeBSD 8.1" {
set root=(hd0,3)
chainloader +1
}
Apparently the new grub2 doesn't know about the FreeBSD partition
letters, but can now find BSD boot partitions within the (hd0,3)
"slice". Maybe this is documented somewher
I've solved the problem by changing my 40_custom to
menuentry "FreeBSD" {
set root=(hd0,2)
chainloader +1
}
Now I can boot FreeBSD 8.1 without any problem.

I have the same problem after upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 to the released
version of 10.10. My 40_custom file looks like:

exec tail -n +3 $0

FYI, I just googled with "freebsd linux grub2" and found some pages with
similar configuration like mine.

I can't remember where I got the configuration, from some guide I found
from googling. The thing is it works well on 10.04 LTS and worked with
the 10.10BETA CD installation, but it doesn't work anymore after
updating bunch of packages.

I don't use BSD. I searched example and I get:
1) else set root with 2 parameters and "chainloader + 1"
2) else set root with 3 parameters and path of an image
