Hi,
I finally nailed down the problem. The culprits are sendfile(2) function
together with Atheros NIC or module. The minimal code to reproduce the bug is
available at http://pastebin.com/r6jjQ7JL.

Just a note: I spotted similar problem using plain Apache on current Debian
stable (squeeze) but perhaps you find this information usefull. The problem
appears for files longer than 2600 bytes.
Additionaly, the problem did not appear for other means of transferring
data (I tried to transfer
