You should be able to edit the file
/var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state to change WirelessEnabled
to true, and that's normally all you'll need to have wireless
connections populate in the applet.

Regarding attached var/log/syslog I turned of the wireless hardswitch,
plugged in the ethernet cable, restarted the computer, unplugged the
ethernet cable, turned on the wireless hardswitch, performed sudo stop
network-manager, wait
This is really weird, according to the logs you would have booted with
wireless enabled, then disabled it after unplugging the ethernet cable.
Could you please confirm that wireless is enabled in
/var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state (you will need to stop
NetworkManager first, which can be
