are you by any chance mixing 'wide view' with 'vertical view'?
What am I looking for is: folders on the left, messages in the middle,
selected message on the right (screenshot:
http://www.ubuntu.cz/system/files/evolutionoanes.png). It was always
named wide in Evolution, AFAIK. Anyhow, I can't see
this preview is certainly vertical view. you can enable it from
ViewPreview and click 'vertical view'

Just tried with a guest session - same. Evolution is the latest
available version - 2.30.3-1ubuntu6. The system was upgraded from Lucid
though.
