I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu Lucid and I am experienced the same problem (i.e.
cannot turn on 3D acceleration). I've tried installing the latest
driver from NVIDIA 256.53, but experienced blank screen on startup, need
to go back to the default driver. thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. While we appreciate the difficulties you are facing, it
would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be
corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO
files you download.
MD5SUM check was executed for the ISO file, it passed OK.
I also executed the integrity check (check disk for defects) on the
alternate disk boot main menu, it also passed OK.
