If you still have the driver updates from the Ubuntu Audio Dev PPA
installed, please remove any module options you added in /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf, reboot, and test again to see if anything has changed.

Until 10.04 plugging in headphones muted the laptop's speakers and
switched over sound to headphone out. Now the sound gets a little
quieter but continues to play from the speakers and the headphones.
