I had a similar issue. But since I knew I had a fully capable nvidia card, I
looked further and realized metacity composting wasn't enabled.
1) "gconf-editor" in terminal
2) apps -> metacity -> general
3) enable "composting-manager" by checking the box
worth checking out if your pretty sure your
[Expired for unity (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60
days.]

Thanks for reporting this bug and help to make Ubuntu better.
at restart, it means that you have a driver which doesn't support 3D,
this is why you see such a diaog.
What driver do you use, can you paste the result of lspci command there,
please?
