Hey Richard,
Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it
looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development
period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release,
which makes me wonder if this is still an is
The -ati package depends on the -radeon package, so if you remove
-radeon both are removed. If you then install -radeon, there is no
reverse dependency to bring in -ati.
It seems indeed that you have the same issue as Bastian in bug 650425,
there's a broken 1360x768 mode detected when using KMS.
I just installed xserver-xorg-video-ati and now it looks like it's
loading the driver successfully, regardless of radeon.modeset - I tried
both 0 and 1 and they are looking good.
Not sure if it's relevant, but I am pretty sure I removed xserver-xorg-
video-radeon originally, and not xserver-xorg-v

It seem like you haven't reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-ati:
[20.442] (II) LoadModule: "ati"
[20.458] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module ati
[20.458] (II) UnloadModule: "ati"
[20.458] (EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
So you are running the FBDEV driver.

Sorry I forgot the -d, "xrandr --verbose -d :0 > xrandr.white.txt". The
"-d :0" is only needed if you run the command on the text console and
not from X itself.

xrandr was not accepting the parameter :0 as you suggested (it was
returning the help page and creating 0 byte file). I ran the following
instead:

Yes, please attach them anyway, but with radeon.modeset=1 (which is
default). I would like to see if there are detected modes that should
not be there and would give a white screen.
Your "16 colour mode" sounds like the VESA driver is being used, you can
verify that by looking at your Xorg.0.log.
I have not been able to replicate the white screen. Ever since I
removed xserver-xorg-video-radeon it has booted into what I am calling
16 colour mode. Then when I added back xserver-xorg-video-radeon, I can
change radeon.modeset value to flip between 16 colour mode and working
mode. Here's some

instead of disabling KMS, you can also try FN-F7 (switching to
extern/intern monitor on thinkpads). Perhaps a duplicate of Bug 650425?

Thanks for your report. Can you please add the logs from when your screen is
white? So reproduce the white screen, switch to the console, and run:
xrandr --verbose :0 > xrandr.white.txt
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.white.txt
and attach these two files.
