What does hang mean? That the UI (gnome/kde/X) freezes complettely?

I wonder if the problem here is not enough memory or something like
this. What machine do you have? How much memory (RAM) and diskspace?

I have a P4 at 2.4 GHz with 1GB of RAM and 150 GB of free disk space.
Gnome freezes and if I switch to a terminal, it freezes when prompting
for the password.

Is anything in /var/log/syslog after the crash? Messages from the kernel
maybe?

No, only the standard logging information.
The computer doesn't crash, but it freezes completely. Even if I press
Ctrl+Alt+Del it doesn't restart, I must power off the computer.
