I have encountered this same bug randomly when opening just a single
gnome-terminal, usually called by another app (could test opening many
gnome-terminals as the OP reports). The screen strobes wildy for about a
few minutes and then the it returns to the desktop but whole display is
corrupted and
I can reproduce this on two machines. One I upgraded from Lucid to the
Maverick RC and experienced this, after which I tried a clean install
which still reproduced the issue. I reverted to the nouveau drivers and
could no longer reproduce it. The other machine is this laptop which was
upgraded to
