Same problem. With two versions of a .pptx. Libreoffice 3.4. Let me know

I have exactly the same problem. I try to open a pptx file X crashes.
In the file Xorg.0.log.old you can find:

Can you provide the ppt by any chance? I can't reproduce this with
anything I've tried so far.

After opening a ppt in openoffice 3.2, X dies. Then X restarts and i see the
login prompt.

yes, but i'd rather not just post it publicly. I did try removing
slides until it got small, yet still caused the crash. I got it down to
~6 slides, but it's a little painful trying to figure out which slide(s)
cause the crash. Can i email it to you (and hope you won't post it :))?
