conflicting packages . The advantage is that it won't scare a 'normal'

Right that's because Synaptic was made only for apt/rpm, it opens (and
lock) your db and all changes that you do are resolved instantly, but
this blocks automatic updates to take place it can be used by only one
user at time, and if it doesn't it could show you not updated values.

apt-get install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra
You will get the same result, this is a package conflic, you need to
decide which package to install.
