I have the same problem in 12.04 (lubuntu). aumix is important since I
am using the i3 window manager where I have to use a command-line tool
or a GUI tool independent of the desktop to control multimedia set

Are there any command-line tool that does the same thing as aumix but
uses pulse-audio?

This is a consequence of "fixing" bug #579300
The fix at the moment is to reconfigure and compile your own kernel, undoing
the damage.
