I was able to work around the problem by adding vga=791 to
/boot/grub/menu.lst:

I can confirm that adding # defoptions=vga=791 quiet splash and
reconfiguring the kernel package worked, although the text is too little
(compared to default resolution in dapper or without usplash running).

The strange colour problem is also mentionted in a bug #63558 comment.
This seems like a high importance bug as it renders the virtual consoles
unusable.

I'll try the beta CD as soon as I have time. At the moment I'm using
version 0.4-32 and the problem is still there. Do I have to
