On the original machine where i ran in to this x wasn't running (failed
to load), when i tested it on this machine 1 hour ago X was running on
tty7 and i was in tty1

I was running from tty1, I don't know if X was still running or not at
the time; I assumed it was not because I was knocked into the tty1 login
at boot.

xserver dosn't have to be down, but running jockey-text from a gnome-terminal
won't trigger the issue.
Press alt+ctrl+f1, type jockey-text and you will see the issue.
Jockey-text is the most useful when you only have a true terminal as an
option, and that is when it will fail you.

I experienced this problem on a fresh Maverick install from a USB key
shortly after its release. The new PC was set up with a modern 1080p
monitor and then relocated to another site and paired with an older Dell
monitor. The older monitor was not properly recognized and I could only
log in to a C
Can you reproduce this? Which ubuntu version did you get this message? I
have tried on Natty, and it works as expected.
