I have same problem.
Asus Maximus Formula motherboard with Asus PCI-Express soundcard
(analogue devices ADI1988). Clean Ubuntu 10.10 install.
Using sp-dif output from soundcard, I get no sounds at all.

OK. For some reason i again have digital sound. But only stereo. No
surround. In sound properties, hardware i can not choose digital
surround. The option isn't there.

OK. I will do it again, no root.
BTW. In terminal, alsamixer i found a ruler called s/pdif. I had sound
for a little while in mplayer. Now again no sound but A/V Reciever
recieves a multi PCM signal.
(Not from CD)

I'm afraid you've completely messed up your sound base, and it will take
some forcible reinstalls of packages followed by manually intensive
cleanup to restore the functionality. Please reproduce this symptom
from a boot of the live cd.
