Thought I would add a quick update.
Downloaded and installed VMware Server Console 1.0.10 and tried it, getting the
same error. Downloaded and installed version 1.0.9 and 1.0.6 and still getting
the same error message. Which is very odd, because prior to upgrading from
10.04 to 10.10 VMware

I went as far back as VMware Server Console 1.0.1 and get the same error

As ridiculous as Lorenzos comment sounds, I can confirm it. Switching
to Ambiance (from Human-Clearlooks) does indeed make vmware-server-
console work. Switching back causes it to fail again. Several other
themes also cause the failure (Dust, New Wave).

Wanted to add that I am having the same issue. Was running Clearlooks
as well. I Changed to Gorilla, Lush, and Nodoka and am still having
this problem.

I discovered that in /System/Preferencea/Appearance/ I had Clearlooks,
if I move to Ambiance (default) then the problem is solved.
So vmware-server-console does not accept this Appearance change.

I have done additional tests on a virtual machine:
Test 1
(1) install ubuntu 10.10 (from scratch)
(2) install vmware-server-console 1.0.10
(3) upgrade ubuntu
== I can see the problem
Test 2
(1) install Ubuntu 10.10 (from scratch)
(2) upgrade ubuntu (vmware-server-console has never been on this
The problem can be reproduced at willing and here the steps to see it:
(1.0) Install Ubuntu 10.10 (do not run the updates)
(2.0) install vmware-server-console, you can download from
http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmserver/VMware-server-linux-client-1.0.10-203137.zip
(2.1) Launch $ sudo
I noticed the following:
$ sudo vmware-config-server-console.pl

but as you can see in the attached screenshot, GTK+ 2.0 was something I
updated (and after I
the same here. After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10, vmware-server-console, even
after dowloading latest version available, afte doing 'apt-get update' and
reinstalled, the erro below appears:
