Ubuntu10.10.

My recovery is to get a root shell:
mount /dev/sdaX /target
mount /proc /target/proc -o bind
mount /sys /target/sys -o bind
mount /dev /target/dev -o rbind
chroot /target
mount /dev/sdaX /boot
update-initramfs -u -k all
grub-install /dev/sda
update-grub
passwd root
(set root password)
exit
shutd
I think the problem occurs when apt fails to configure additional
packages to be installed from the cdrom - in my case I'm using the usb
installer.
my /var/log/syslog says:
grep:
/target/etc/sources.list
: No such file or directory
Exception during installation
