i have 1 GB ram in my system. this slowness and problem are just since i ubuntu 10.10. i have first upgraded from 10.04 and i had experienced a lot of slowness of evolution than i did a clean install to handle that and put up 10.10 clean and newly. it is the same. from time to time it slows down
