In my case, high memory/CPU utilization in polkitd and CPU utilization in dbus was the result of repeated calls to nm-tool that I was making in conky to determine my wireless essid. In previous versions, this was not a problem, and there is clearly a memory leak in polkitd associated with this.

I also have this problem on 10.10. The 10.04 install that I upgraded from did not have this problem. It has nothing to do with pulseaudio, since I don't even have pulseaudio installed. Therefore, the work-arounds suggested elsewhere don't help. -- polkitd Memory leak / cpu leak
