You are correct. I see no errors in the output. So of course those files
were empty

Nope, none. 2 is Stderr IIRC, there *is* terminal output, which would be
STDOUT, there was the typical synchronization with ubuntu package
repositories. Unless you meant to say 2>&1 there shouldn't be any output if
there is no stderr to capture. Assumed you were eliminating that by design

I see your sources list file but what about the other 2? When you ran
((sudo apt-get update 2> ~/Desktop/File1)) was there any output in the
terminal window at all?
