Sorry, radeonhd is unmaintained and doesn't work with kernel
modesetting, it's not coming back. Judging by your upstream bug report
things should work out-of-the-box on natty (which has 2.6.38).

I use ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] and can't enable desktop
effects on opensource driver.
On lucid I use radeonhd and desktop effects works normally, but in maverick
radeonhd missed.
So, if radeonhd at now works normally, maybe there are time to roll it back to
repository? Or mayb

I hope so. I am using ati version now, with Alex hints it works. If this
will be working out-of-the-box there will be no need in this case for
radeonhd variant.

Yes it does work normally after compiling it for maverick (git tree)
with KMS disabled. All fine. So it might still be useful for others too.
