This has been happenning to me since when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10.

Each time I open a distant file via sftp with geany, if I perform some
modifications on it and save it, it writes a blank file and I lose all
my data. This does not happen if I use gedit on the same files...

$ apt-cache policy geany
