Public bug reported:

When booting, grub shows a garbled screen. It still boots into Ubuntu,
and the menu can be manipulated blindly.

Upon further investigation, /boot/grub/menu.lst contains a reference to
/boot/grub/default-splash.xpm.gz, which is a symlink to a file that does
not exist (/usr/share/pixmaps/grub/ubuntu-artwork.xpm.gz)

Grub was working as expected before I upgraded from Dapper -> Edgy. I
suspect that the ubuntu-artwork.xpm.gz file was lost in the upgrade, or
is provided by a different package that grub does not seem to depend
upon.

Alternatively, the upgrade of grub did not reinstall the menu.lst file
with an updated splashscreen file location.
