You can disable customised tab completion for scp by adding "complete
-r scp" to the end of ~/.bash_profile
Of course, this will also remove hostname completion. I find it easier
to just refrain from using tab completion on slow servers. I find the
feature very useful on LAN computers though.

Good as long as it's not a bug.
Personally I would prefer not to have it, since in South Africa we do
not always have access to fast internet and would not like to use it. Is
there some config setting to turn that specific feature off?

It's a feature, not a bug :-) Scp auto-completion actually contacts the
remote host to find paths on it. If you have password-less SSH
authentication, this works well. If not, it takes a few seconds anyway
to contact the host and fail the authentication. Rejecting.

Oh, and I forgot to add that www.ubuntu.com is not a good example since
it doesn't run an SSH server, and ssh seems to hang when trying to
connect to it.

I can confirm this bug. Typing scp :/us and tab hangs bash
for several seconds.

It just recovers meaning it starts responding to keyboard input again after
about a minute. I have tested it on two separate machines one with the server
install and one with the desktop.
It did happen with another command a couple days ago, but I cannot for
the life of me remember which one it

Can you pls answer the following ?
Can you show/tell what you get when the console comes back after the freeze ?
Are there too many completions starting with "u" ?
Is it only for the above command you are facing the freeze ?
