Reported! Crash happened almost immediately. I reverted to all official

I am using Kubuntu 10.10 AMD64, fully up-to-date. Everything works well,
except for my graphics card. I have a Radeon X1250, and whenever I try
to load the KWin desktop effects, things crash. Before the last kernel
I am cleaning up any changes I made to my system, reverting to the
official Ubuntu 10.10 packages (I tried the x-updates PPA to try to fix
the problem). I will ensure that the problem is still there, and will
collect info on the bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at

Still no fix to the problem. I've read that someone fixed it by
downgrading to the Karmic version of the graphics driver. This seems
like a poor solution. I would like to see this somehow tracked down and
fixed! if anyone can give me something to do that will help narrow down
what the problem actua
I'm having the same problem.
Kubuntu 10.10 (AMD64), fully updated. Graphics is Radeon HD 3200 with
opensource drivers (MSi Wind12 U230). Kwin crashes X when effects are
turned on. I found out later that Kwin doesn't crash (as much) when I
turn off the blur effect. When testing when blur effect
Hi,
I have found the crash in the kdm.log file (under /var/logs) and all I
see is Segmentation fault, and no other hints.
I guess running kdm would be a bit hard (I am a Hw engineer and not so
bright with SW ;) )
Anyone want to take this up ?

Yes, I know I could use 10.04, as I have for the last six months, but I
would rather see a fix for this. KDE users with Radeon cards in the X
series are a decently sized group of people, and it's annoying to
upgrade to a new distribution (especially where your card has worked
perfectly well in the
I decided to switch back to 10.04 (Linux Mint 9 KDE actually)--with the
nomodeset kernel option, it runs really well. If you dont have data you
will miss, or can back up, I would switch! You can get KDE 4.5, with the
kubuntu backports ppa (be careful not to break the system though)

I'm running 32 bit now, with pre-released updates, and so far, so good.
Performance is excellent, so hopefully I won't experience any more
crashes. I'll post back here if it does crash again.

I have the same problem. Screen flickers; kwin wont work. Compiz will,
however. At first, kwin worked, then only when using XRender, now not at
all. I am using the opensource radeon driver, which worked in previous
versions of kubuntu.

I booted the 32 bit live USB, and took a video so you can see the
problem. As you can see, performance is actually very good when it is
actually working, but the flickering is even worse in person. (The
camera kind of blends some of the flickers together)
