I am experiencing exactly the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. The card I
am using however is an E-mu 0404 PCI.
When I run lspci the soundcard shows as:
04:03.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value
Also, running the lsmod | grep emu -i command shows that the emu10k
Another use with the same problem, the same sound card ( EMU10k1X ).
Workaround works, although I haven't tried DivX yet.

I can confirm that this is a bug with that particular card/module. I
removed the card and switched to integrated audio (VIA Technologies,
Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller) and problems have
disappeared.
A possible workaround for the EMU10k1X was reported in the forums as
working:
