Reporting same condition, exact same model of motherboard. Fresh install
of 10.04 detects the onboard sound fine, fresh install of 10.10 does
not. In both cases HDMI audio from my ATI video card is detected, but I
am not able to use the audio from that.

I've removed the proprietary Nvidia driver and tested it now.
The problem stays.
