The mic on my headphones still does not seem to work.
The headphones play sound without problems though.

Yes, you could forcibly store it using:
sudo alsactl store
Arguably, however, this is a usability bug in pulse, though given the
intricacies (hysterical raisins) of Creative hardware, this may be
difficult to fix properly.

Ok, I finally found my card's (Creative SB Audigy/SE) manual.
Since I have a 2.1 speaker the only system only the green connector is
applicable (Front Left/Right). That's the only output device that's hooked up.
I have analog speakers, so I doubt Digital Source will work (I tried, it

When I do
$ amixer -c 0 -- sset Master,0 playback unmute 100%
I get:

Quote it. There isn't a need to use the extended dev syntax; amixer
sset 'Digital Source',0 'AC97 in' or the like suffices.
Why would the correct device by selected automatically? The codec has
no way of knowing which you want to be default. ;)

I did the following
$ rm -rf ~/pulse
$ rm -rf ~/.gstreamer-0.10
$ sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload
I head short quiet buzzing sounds coming from the speakers.
I also hear that sound if I do
