I guess this is caused by the difference between 21.* and 22.* versions of
emacs-snapshot.
In latest gutsy it seems that this has been fixed. Can you please confirm this?

I changed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that it had:
Section "Files"
FontPath"/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"
FontPath"/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic"
FontPath"/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath"/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled"
Yes, here is a screen shot. I didn't made any font configuration in Emacs.
This is with version emacs-snapshot-gtk 1:20060915-1.
