Empathy sucks. I'm using Miranda IM via Wine and it works perfectly.
Well, almost. At least their developers are able to catch up with
protocol changes within one day.

I upgraded to maverick and it works now. Maverick has newer packages
than Lucid..
I thought the LTS release would be appropiate for none-geek users. I had
to update them to maverick just for icq.. LTS should have such a fix
first!!

None of the SSL workarounds posted here are working for me. Can't

I see two solutions:
1. Create patch for pidgin used on 10.04 based on working patch for newer
version.
2. Update pidgin/libpurple version in 10.04.
I believe, both solutions are much better than leaving broken package
for months.

just run it in your gnome-terminal
mc-tool list
this will show you some lines. All you need is haze/icq/_
mc-tool update haze/icq/_... bool:use-ssl=0
than just reconnect
