Tested. When I use compiz without visual effects problem doesn't exist.
I had mutter enabled when the problem was happening, well... I think mutter
_is_ using some compositing or whatever... I've installed compiz-icon to enable
compiz with it. Unfortunately I can't enable those

Does this happen only when you have compiz (aka Visual Effects) turned
on? This sounds similar to a bug we saw reported a lot for 945 where X
would crash because the i945 is limited to a 2048x2048 texture
