agreed and i will improve it, whenever i can. i have created a wrapper script,
that launches vlc via strace and logs the output to a file.
the main reason for posting it in the first place, was that maybe others (and
myself) get motivated to contribute there own findings later. ;)

Thank you but there is no reasonable way we can investigate a bug report
that requires a rather uncommon hardware configuration and only occurs
in unspecified circumstances.
If you want to know what component is causing access to /dev/sdb, I can
only think of using strace -f.
