Closing again. Now I did a bit of research, and you should use setxkbmap
instead. Gkb-applet from GNOME actually uses XKB and those xmodmap.*
files should probably be dropped.

Sorry for re-opening this, but please do a bit of reserch before closing bugs.
As seen on packages.ubuntu.com, xmodmap.* files are found _only_ under
gnome-applets-data. KDE has _not_ them under any package.
I've two questions:
1) Why the files, if those are gnome-applets files (for which applet?)
That's not a bug in xmodmap which is just a tool to set keymaps. There
is a keymap applet in gnome which uses those xmodmap.* files, and I bet
KDE has something similar.
