I assume /etc/X11/X is a symlink to /bin/true? If so, reinstalling xserver-xorg should fix it, though I'm not entirely sure how it would have gotten (and stayed) in this state without digging around a bit... -- /usr/bin/X in x11-common package is "true" binary https://launchpad.net/bugs/68443 -
