Well, actually, it didn't, which was why I found it strange. I had to
manually edit the sources.list file to get the system back to its
original state.

You are correct. If the update had 'failed' then the original
sources.list would be restored. But it seems your update went properly
since you are successfully running 11.04.

Absolutely. Normally, if there's been an interruption, such as a bad
internet connection, the system would "roll back" the changes. In this
case, it didn't.

In my case, it was not due to any internet connection failure - the
system was missing some updates.
I should have run the update before upgrading to the next version, but I
forgot to do that in that instance.

I cannot seem to reproduce this problem. If I crash the update-manager
by cutting the Internet connection, it does fail but it also restores
the system sources.list to the original maverick one. What type of
failure caused your problem?
