Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
Whenever Appearances is opened from System > Preferences, gnome- appearance-properties spikes to around 100%. After closing Appearances, gnome-appearance-properties will not end, and continues to hammer the cpu. If you open Appearances more then once, end up with multiple instances of gnome-appearance-properties that didn't end after closing Appearances, all using massive amounts of cpu. Using 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10, and this happens on more than one machine (one desktop, one laptop).
