I can confirm this problem exists with version 5.5.17-1ubuntu1. The
error is:
Could not start Tomcat 5 servlet engine because no Java Development Kit
(JDK) was found. Please download and install JDK 1.3 or higher and set
JAVA_HOME in /etc/default/tomcat5.5 to the JDK's installation directory.

Original poster : it seems to work fine - having reinstalled Edgy and
then tomcat5.0.
Previously it would refuse to start - possibly connected with having
tried and uninstalled the faulty 5.5 ; cannot reproduce it.
