Actually HAL in feisty has some improvements to prevent spikes in
battery reports - it may fix this issue.

I ran lshal once a minute until the laptop hibernated. I've attached the last
four minutes.
Oddly, the remaining charge percentage, which was slowly going down, neared 20%
and
then suddenly dropped down to 6%! Presumably this triggered the hibernation.
