Oh, huh. I wonder what it could be. I have them set as hotkeys in Gnome
settings, but to my knowledge nothing is running that would actually make
use of them... Thanks for the insight, anyway.

Much as I suspected, xev does not receive the key press events. In other
words, the X server is not sending them to applications. So it's not a
VLC bug.
I suppose another application has grabbed the keys, so no other can
receive them.

Here's the output. The keys pressed were, in order: Play/Pause,
Previous, Next, Stop.
