Title:
Meta-bug: Package upgrades don't automagically merge config file
changes
To manage notifications
Sweet. Since I'm the beggar and not the one actually doing the spec, I
humbly make some suggestions.
One is a stop-gap measure to deal with config files as they currently
are. What you need for a merge are three files: (1) the old config
file, unmodified, (2) the old config file, modified, and

I really don't have time to draft a spec on this. But just because I
don't have time for this doesn't mean that it isn't a "bug" in the sense
that this causes people a lot of trouble. This is an issue that should
remain open until there's a general solution to it. That is to say, the
fact that I
I don't encounter much this problem myself because I don't mess much
with config files, but I feel at ease to draft a spec based on previous
comments. I'll check nothing similar is already proposed, and draft one
if not, posting the link here.

Rejecting the bug which really is an RFE and asking Timothy to follow
the proposed route and draft a spec.

Timothy, thanks for clarifying . I think the best way for you to go
forward is to provide some clear specs and get feedback via

I was not suggesting that manual config changes be prevented. I was
suggesting that they be generally discouraged. For the desktop users,
there is a graphical (or even possibly curses-driven) configuration tool
that should be preferred (indeed, it should be made so user-friendly
that no one quest
An important factor that would help out here considerably (also part of
Ubuntu's effort to become more friendly) is to discourage users from making
manual config changes from a text editor.
I think this kind of request makes it an immediate no-no, not just
because of my personal preferences.
