Public bug reported: The vstusb module included with this kernel has been removed from later versions of the kernel because the manufacturer of the device (Vernier Software & Technology) decided to go with a userspace implementation based on libusb instead: http://140.211.166.79/mailarchive/git-commits- head/2010/3/3/27772/thread
Meanwhile, Ubuntu Lucid, which is a LTS release, includes this module. Including this module creates problems for some people and doesn't help anyone. It creates problems for people trying to work with this device using libusb, because vstusb automatically binds to the device. It does not help anyone, because the manufacturer does not document or support the use of their device through vstusb. They distribute a beta version of their software for linux, and this beta version uses libusb, not vstusb. They provide documentation for third-party developers on how to write software for their device, but this documentation is for use with libusb, and in fact will not work on a system that has vstusb installed. For these reasons, I think vstusb should be blacklisted by default in Lucid. This would make it possible for third-party developers to successfully follow the manufacturer's documentation in writing software to work with the device, and make that software work out of the box. Otherwise users will be presented with hassles for the lifetime of Lucid.
