Some people have had problems with their laptops being slow if they use
the generic kernel. To see what your kernel is open a terminal and type
uname -a

I have the same kernel since I install Edgy on my HP pavilion ZV5340EA.
I have the same problem when I boot without network.
The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3000+

I can also confirm this. same fix speed things up.
i'm running a hp nc 4000
intel pentium m 1400mhz
512 mb ram
default edgy kernel (2.6.17-10-generic)
Never had and problem under dapper / breezy
