So I've reinstalled the PC I was talking about in my first comment. I
installed nvidia-glx-legacy, and this time I made sure of where to find
the backup xorg.conf which "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable" writes. I
restarted, being sure that this time it would work because nvidia-glx-

after "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable" which does not work and prevents X
for working.
