I should note that the latest upstream source tree is here:

It includes a fix for this bug. We will no longer have to rebuild input-
utils when the evdev proto is bumped.

The attached source package files represent the current state of the
debian source package tree and an import of the latest upstream source
snapshot. I am attempting to contact the debian developer to upload the
new source package there, but in the meantime we should upload this

Impor
This was discussed on lkml, and in response the version check was
removed from input-utils. So we should probably pull in the latest
upstream to avoid this problem in the future.
