Confirmed. The vga=791 does fix the colour problem, but the image still
seems to be too large for the screen, i.e. it appears shifted towards
the top of the screen.

After some retesting:
adding vga=791 in grub's menu.lst options makes the splash visible.
It still seems to be shifted towards the top of the screen.
791 = 1024x768x16bit is the actual best vesa mode that can be used in
this model (I tested within grub using 'vbeprobe' command)

Likewise on my machine -
Fujitsu/Siemens Lifebook 690Tx - Graphic adapter is Neomagic Graph
128XD, max capability is 1024x768 in16bit colour.
(can't really take a picture as it is so dark to be almost invisible).
Also happens in the shutdown (or goodbye) screen.
