I can confirm this although I'm getting all the applets appear twice. It
happens right after the system is loaded up. Killing gnome-panel or
removing indicator-applet and adding it again to the panel fixes the
issue - however I have to do this every time I boot my system. That's
quite annoying. Why

Here it is. As you can see, the second one isn't even updated, but I can
use it to control WLAN (choosing Flight Mode, connecting to other
networks etc.)
