I installed the ppa and (re)installed pitivi to v0.13.5 and now the
rendering process started and even completed!
(I can not view the result in Totem, but that, I guess, is another
issue).

Could you try with the packages provided by
https://launchpad.net/~gstreamer-developers/+archive/ppa ?
0.13.4 is outdated.
