I have also ubuntu 10.10 and I try the following command in a terminal :
gnome-open http://ubuntu.com
xdg-open http://ubuntu.com
The both were working : they launched the web browser I selected in the
gnome-default-applications-properties. This was working well for Firefox
and Chromium.
